1. Interesting Facts about Fat

Fat cells, called “adipocytes,” can accumulate almost anywhere in the body depending on diet, genetics, age and various other factors. Fat serves as an energy store, protects internal organs and participates in hormone regulation.

Fat in itself does not make us sick, in fact it is very important for the body, however it depends on the right amount. If excessive amounts of fat are accumulated, this can have a negative effect on health.

Is it possible to have too much fat? Definitely yes! Smaller amounts of fat can provide the body with energy. Too much fat, on the other hand, is bad for your health and can also have a negative effect on your well-being.

2. Liposuction: Requirements

Liposuction is an option for women and men. Ideally, the patient’s weight should be stable and close to the respective desired weight. The method can be used in healthy patients to reduce isolated fat deposits that cannot be easily eliminated by exercise and dieting. Severe underlying diseases that could adversely affect the result should be avoided if possible. Likewise, patients should have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved through liposuction.

The skin should be elastic, as liposuction removes excess fat but does not tighten the skin per se, or tightens it only slightly. Smokers should abstain from nicotine for at least two weeks before and after the procedure to achieve the best possible result without increased risk of complications.

3. Consultation for your Liposuction

Before surgery, you will be personally examined and advised by Dr. Sattler. During the consultation photographs are taken and drawings are made. After that, an individual treatment plan will be created for you, as each patient is different both physically and in terms of expectations. The treatment plan is based on the latest scientifically proven treatment methods. The procedure is discussed in detail, including the relevant limitations, alternatives and possible risks. You will be fully informed before you decide to undergo surgery.

Basically, a realistic expectation is necessary to make the procedure a success for all involved. During the consultation with Dr. Sattler, you can calmly show which areas bother you the most. Accordingly, a treatment plan tailored to you will then be created. Patients with good skin elasticity usually tolerate liposuction best, especially if only moderate amounts of fat are suctioned. Therefore, the amount of fat to be suctioned is also discussed during your consultation in order to achieve the best possible result for each individual.

Consistent wearing of compression garments for a few weeks after the procedure is very important, as this supports the skin’s restoring forces. This is the only way to achieve the best possible contour and avoid areas of hanging skin. The skin’s restoring forces are adversely affected by aging, UV damage and weight fluctuations. Very loose or sagging skin can have its appearance visually enhanced by liposuction. Therefore, it may sometimes be appropriate to perform a combination of liposuction and skin tightening to achieve the desired result and meet your aesthetic goals.

5. Liposuction: Surgical Methods

Only modern and scientifically based methods are used by Dr. Sattler. Liposuction in Hamburg is usually performed under general anesthesia. Very small areas can sometimes be suctioned under local anesthesia. Individual factors and anatomical conditions of the patient determine the type of anesthesia and the surgical technique to be used.

Before the operation, the excess fat deposits are marked and photographed so that they can then be precisely suctioned off. The fat is injected with a special sterile fluid to minimize blood loss and loosen the fat cells.

Very small incisions are made in discrete areas of the body to use fine suction cannulas to suck out the excess fat cells using a gentle vacuum. After successful liposuction, the small incisions are closed and sterilely bandaged.

The liposuctioned fat can be processed in the same operation to prepare it for autologous fat transfer. This can be used, for example, to inject wrinkles and lips. But also the buttocks can be shaped with autologous fat and labia can be injected. Breast augmentation using autologous fat transfer is also a popular procedure.

Careful work can thus create even contours and achieve very beautiful results.

6. After your Liposuction Surgery

After liposuction surgery, the wounds are covered by sterile plasters. Compression garments should usually be worn for six weeks post-operatively to minimize swelling and provide the best possible support for the skin’s restoring forces. Immediately after the operation, the daily activities of life can be performed again, bed rest is not necessary. However, strenuous activities, such as sports, should be suspended for a while. Depending on your recovery process, Dr. Sattler will discuss with you exactly when you may resume which activities. Also, he will tell you how long the compression garment must be worn in your specific case.

Swelling and bruising are to be expected after liposuction and usually resolve within a few weeks. The recovery phase can be accelerated by various measures, such as cooling, compression and decongestant medication. With good planning, liposuction can eliminate excess fat, improve appearance and boost well-being. If you have any questions or concerns after surgery regarding the procedure performed on you, please contact our office.

Liposuction permanently reduces fat cells. Nevertheless, weight regain may occur if caloric intake exceeds caloric expenditure. In order to maintain the desired result in the best possible way, attention should be paid to a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and a balanced diet.

8. Liposuction: Costs of the Operation

Liposuction is usually an aesthetic procedure that is not covered by health insurance. Private health insurance companies do not normally cover the costs either. It is therefore usually a self-pay service, which means that the patient must pay for the costs himself. Exceptions can be conditions after accidents, burns, cancer and birth defects, which change the body image adversely and lead to suffering in the affected person. There are also exemptions for a condition of lipedema. In these cases, you should have a written confirmation from your health insurance company before the operation, in which the cost coverage is clearly regulated. This is especially true for multiple interventions.

The specific cost of liposuction depends, among other things, on the number and size of the areas to be treated and the total amount of fat to be removed. During the initial consultation, a customized treatment plan will be formulated for you to achieve your aesthetic goals. Accordingly, a personalized estimate of costs will be prepared for you. In the case of a procedure performed as part of a self-pay service, it may be advisable to take out follow-up cost insurance to minimize potential financial risks. Dr. Sattler will also advise you in this regard.

9. Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The maximum amount of fat that can be suctioned without endangering your health depends on many factors. In large healthy patients with a stately build, four to five liters of fat can usually be removed without difficulty in a single operation. In small petite patients, the amount of fat that can be suctioned without risk may be significantly less. The same applies to elderly people or patients with relevant underlying diseases.

In some areas of the body, even small amounts of fat make a very big difference, for example on the chin and face. Here, usually only very small amounts of fat are suctioned to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result.

Liposuction is not for weight loss, but to eliminate various areas of unwanted fat to improve the body silhouette. Ideally, the figure can be optimized and self-confidence strengthened. During your consultation with Dr. Sattler, your expectations will be discussed in detail so that we can then formulate realistic goals together.

The suctioned fat is disposed of after the operation. If an autologous fat transfer or nanofat transfer has been arranged, the extracted fat will be processed immediately during your surgery and reused directly. By means of fine cannulas, for example, lips or wrinkles can be injected, or breasts, buttocks and labia can be optimized. Dr. Sattler will be happy to advise you on the many possible variations.
