Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Hamburg, Germany

Fluctuations of your body weight and pregnancies will stretch your skin, connective tissues and abdominal muscles. These structures may not completely recoil because they lose their elasticity. Excess skin and fat can be removed nicely with an abdominoplasty. If the abdominal muscles have separated they can be joined again in the midline in order to stabilize the trunk. An abdominoplasty procedure with Dr. Sattler tightens not only the front part of the abdomen but also the lateral flanks, resulting in a better-contoured waistline.

1) Before Your Operation

Dr. Thorsten Sattler will consult and examine you personally before your surgical procedure. Due to the fact that each person is unique, he will create a personal treatment plan for you based on the latest methods and knowledge in Plastic Surgery. He will take photos and will explain the operation to you with the help of drawings and photos. Limitations, possible risks and alternative treatment options will also be discussed.

The main goal of an abdominoplasty is to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from your abdomen and to stabilize the abdominal muscles in case they have separated. This creates a beautiful body contour, a sculpted waist and a stable musculature of the trunk. To achieve the best aesthetic result possible, a tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures, such as liposuction, autologous fat transfer or breast augmentation.

The waist can be nicely contoured by liposuction, as well as the transition zone to the genital area and the sides of the chest wall. A harmonious appearance with a youthful look is the goal of the operation and it can be achieved by combining various operating techniques in one procedure.

The projection of your breasts is more prominent if the abdomen is flat. This effect can be highlighted if, in addition to the abdominoplasty, an autologous fat transfer to the breasts is performed. For this purpose, the previously extracted fat can be used. Of course, a breast augmentation with breast implants is also possible.

A well-balanced healthy diet including enough protein is very important for your wound healing. Dr. Sattler is not only a board-certified Plastic Surgeon, but also holds a degree in nutritional medicine. He will advise you with regard to supplements and healthy diets. Alcohol and nicotine should be discontinued at least two weeks before and after your surgery to ensure the best result possible. Obese patients, smokers and diabetics have an increased risk for wound healing problems.

2) Operating Techniques

Only safe and modern surgical methods are used by Dr. Sattler. An abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. After the operation you should stay in the hospital for at least two nights. If a “mini-abdominoplasty” is performed and only small amounts of skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen, the procedure might be performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. However, this is the exception and not comparable with a complete abdominoplasty.

Because there is a large number of different surgical techniques, Dr. Thorsten Sattler will discuss with you in detail, which technique should be used to achieve your aims and desires.

In an abdominoplasty, the incisions are usually placed in the transverse crease of the lower abdomen in order to remove fat and excess skin. Scars from previous cesarean sections can also be removed. Dr. Sattler uses an electric scalpel which allows him to operate with extreme precision and with minimum blood loss. If the abdominal muscles have separated in the midline, for example after gaining weight or getting pregnant, these muscles are reunited with sutures in order to stabilize the trunk. The bellybutton is repositioned and sewn in with great attention to detail.

The wound is sutured with special absorbable threads which have barbs. A dehiscence of the wound is almost impossible using those threads and suture removal is not necessary. The wound is sealed with a special skin glue. This creates optimal conditions for wound healing and contamination of the wound by germs of the nearby genital area is prevented.

Often the tummy tuck is combined with a liposuction of the flanks to highlight the beautiful feminine waistline. The fat that is removed can be used for autologous fat transfer, e.g. to the breasts.

This way the female contours are accentuated even further. Of course, a breast augmentation with implants is also possible.

For thin patients with little adipose tissue and isolated skin excess at the lower abdomen, a mini-abdominoplasty can be performed. Only a short scar is necessary in order to remove skin and fat tissue from the lower abdomen. The bellybutton does not need to be relocated. A mini-abdominoplasty can also be combined with other operations, for example with a correction of a caesarean scar.

Because there is a large number of different surgical techniques, Dr. Thorsten Sattler will discuss with you in detail, which technique should be used to achieve your aims and desires.

3) Tummy Tuck

By German law, we are not allowed to show you before/after pictures online. However, during your personal consultation with Dr. Thorsten Sattler this will be possible.

4) After Your Abdominoplasty Operation

After an abdominoplasty you will have to stay in hospital for at least two nights. Often two or three drains are placed and will be removed after a few days. Special compression garments have to be worn for several weeks to support the wound healing and muscle repair, but also to help skin-recoiling.

After your surgery heavy lifting and sport should be avoided for a few weeks. With an abdominoplasty, possibly in combination with a liposuction, excellent aesthetic results can be achieved. In order to support the wound healing and to obtain the best results possible, you should follow a healthy and balanced diet and you should stay away from alcohol and nicotine for at least two weeks before and after your surgery.

A mini-abdominoplasty may be carried out on an outpatient-basis, but you will also have to take care of yourself and compression garments should be worn for a few weeks after your surgery.

5) Frequently Asked Questions About Abdominoplasties:

a) Do I have to stay in hospital after my surgery?

After an abdominoplasty you should stay in hospital for at least two nights. This is important for your regeneration and wound healing.
A mini-abdominoplasty, which involves only the removal of skin and fat from the lower abdomen, may be performed on an outpatient basis, if you are young and healthy.

b) Do I need general anesthesia for an abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. A mini-abdominoplasty may be performed under local anesthesia, if only small amounts of tissue are removed.

c) Can I get pregnant after an abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty will not affect the chances of getting pregnant. However, wound healing should be completed before you are planning to get pregnant. The results of an abdominoplasty can be affected by a pregnancy. Especially if you have a large baby or twins, your abdominal skin may be flaccid (again) and may have stretch marks. If the abdominal muscles got fixed as part of the abdominoplasty, they might separate again. The hormonal changes during your pregnancy may also have adverse effects on your skin structure.

Weight gain and fluctuations of your body weight can also have negative effects on the shape of your body, but in principle, a pregnancy after an abdominoplasty is possible.

d) Can an abdominoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Very often it makes sense to combine an abdominoplasty with a liposuction of the flanks to emphasize a beautiful feminine waistline. The transition zone to the genital area and the sides of the chest can also be liposucked in order to achieve a balanced body contour.

The extracted fat can be used for autologous fat transfer, e.g. to the breasts. This way the female contours are highlighted even further. Of course, breast augmentation is also possible with implants.

e) Do I have to change my lifestyle before an abdominoplasty?

A well-balanced and healthy diet with enough protein intake is very important for good and fast wound healing. Alcohol and nicotine should be avoided at least two weeks before and after your surgery.
