Breast Reduction in Hamburg

Larger breasts affect many women and can cause significant discomfort. In these cases, a breast reduction can provide the needed relief that may lead to an overall improved quality of life.

The extra weight and limited mobility of large breasts can quickly become a burden. Both health and aesthetic aspects play a role. Among other things, the following complaints may occur:

  • Back, shoulder and neck pain.
  • In the underbust folds, moisture and heat accumulation can cause skin problems, sometimes infections, which then require antibiotic treatment.
  • Large, sagging breasts can also cause impairment from a psychological point of view, as fashionable tight clothing cannot be worn.
  • In the sauna or in the shower at the gym, sagging breasts can have a detrimental effect on self-esteem.
  • The practicing of many sports is more difficult.

Dr. Sattler is one of only a few plastic surgeons in Northern Germany with the additional qualification “Breast Medicine (Senology)” and is a member of the “German Society for Senology (DGS)”.

Note: There are also “breast reductions” for men. The reduction of the so-called gynecomastia is also offered in our practice.

1. What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is also called mammoplasty and its primary purpose is to reduce the size as well as the weight of the breasts. The breast shape can also be adjusted and the skin tightened.

Skin, fat and glandular tissue are removed from the breasts and the mammary gland body is reshaped. Large areolas can be additionally reduced, as well as the nipples themselves if they are very voluptuous. Volume enhancement in the area of the décolleté can be additionally performed in the case of a deep breast line, e.g. by means of an autologous fat transfer.

For women who have had breast augmentation with implants, breast reduction is also possible. For example, if you are no longer satisfied with the size of the implants. In this case, a breast implant exchange is an option, if necessary with an additional breast lift in the same session.

2. Before your Breast Reduction Surgery.

Dr. med. Thorsten Sattler conducts a detailed consultation with you before every surgical procedure and examines you personally. Since each person is unique in terms of their anatomy and desires, an individual treatment plan will be created for you. The treatment plan is based on the latest methods and findings of plastic surgery. Photographs are taken and with the help of drawings and photos the procedure is explained in detail. Dr. Sattler will also discuss limitations, possible risks and alternative treatment methods with you and create a personalized post-treatment plan with you.

Before surgery, it is recommended to have an ultrasound of the breasts, sometimes a mammogram may be useful, and in special cases an MRI.

What is the Goal of a Breast Reduction?

The main goal of breast reduction surgery is to create smaller and lighter compact breasts with a more youthful shape, thus relieving a number of different complaints. For example, fashionable, tight clothing can be worn again. Orthopedic complaints and skin problems improve. Sports activities are easier and the quality of life and self-confidence increase.

To achieve the best possible aesthetic result, breast reduction can be combined with other procedures. For example, with liposuction on the sides of the chest, where excess fat is often hidden. Liposuction of the abdomen and waistline emphasizes the dynamic overall appearance and the extracted fat can be used for an autologous fat transfer, e.g. to the décolleté.

What is there to consider during a Breast Reduction?

A balanced, healthy diet with adequate protein intake is very important for good and fast wound healing. Since Dr. Sattler is not only a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, but also a nutritionist, he will also advise you in this regard.

3. Breast Reduction: Surgery Methods and Procedure

Only safe and modern surgical methods are used. Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and a hospital stay for one night is usually advisable.

Very many different techniques for performing breast reduction are known and have proven successful. The best and safest surgical method for you will be chosen, depending on your anatomy, your goals and desires.

There are several rules of behavior that you should follow as part of your breast reduction procedure with Dr. Sattler. Click here to access the rules of behavior.

Breast Reduction Surgery Procedure

In a classic breast reduction, incisions are made around the areolas and, if necessary, are made vertically down to the crease under the breast. This allows for optimal removal of excess skin, fat and mammary gland tissue. In pronounced cases, the excess tissue is not simply removed, but is piled up using a special technique and used to build up the upper pole of the breast. Sometimes in this context is also spoken of the “inner bra”. In some cases, it is necessary to make another incision across the underbust crease in the sense of a T-cut. This allows the tissue to be optimally tightened and reduced from the sides as well.

The areolas of heavy breasts are often quite large and distorted longitudinally oval. Therefore, in the course of breast reduction, the areolas are usually reduced in size, moved upwards and aligned in shape and size. If the actual nipples are also very lush, these can also be reduced in size.

Basically, Dr. Sattler will try to place all scars so that they are hidden by bras and bikinis and affect the aesthetic result as little as possible.

Dr. Sattler uses an electric scalpel that allows him to operate with extreme precision and minimizes blood loss. The wound is stitched with self-dissolving sutures. Thread removal is therefore not necessary. The wound edges are sealed with a special skin adhesive. On the one hand, this creates optimal conditions for the best possible wound healing and contamination of the wound by germs is prevented. At the end of the breast reduction surgery, the breasts are taped to stabilize the surgical result.

There are very many different surgical techniques and combinations of different methods. Therefore, before the procedure, Dr. Sattler will discuss with you exactly which techniques will best and most safely achieve your goals and wishes. With attention to detail, Dr. Sattler will ensure a youthful, feminine body silhouette and the optimal aesthetic result.

5. Breast Reduction: Aftercare

A stay at the clinic for one night is usually advisable after a breast reduction in Hamburg. A special supporting bra should be worn for several weeks to help the wound heal. However, it also serves to allow the skin to retract in the best possible way and create an even body silhouette. Compression also aids lymphatic flow, improves wound water evacuation, and thus minimizes swelling.

Physical exertion and sports should be avoided for several weeks after the procedure. Aesthetically very pleasing results can be achieved by breast reduction, if necessary in combination with liposuction or autologous fat transfer. In order to support wound healing and maintain the achieved results in the best possible way, attention should be paid to a balanced and healthy diet at least during the wound healing phase. You should also avoid alcohol and nicotine altogether if possible. A sports bra helps to maintain the achieved result in the long term.

6. Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Reduction

Breast reduction can be combined with liposuction to achieve the best possible aesthetic result. In particular, fat deposits on the waist, abdomen and lateral chest can be suctioned to further accentuate smaller and firmer breasts. The extracted fat can be used for an autologous fat transfer to the décolleté to accentuate the upper pole of the breast.

Breast reductions can usually be repeated several times. Before performing another operation, it is advisable to find out where the incisions were made during the first operation. It’s important to know which blood vessels have been preserved and which have not in order to avoid wound healing problems after the second operation. Therefore, be sure to bring the old surgery report with you to the consultation.

If a condition already exists after a breast lift or breast reduction, further tightening can be performed if necessary. In particular, stretched nipple areolas can be re-tightened and adjusted in symmetry. Scar correction is also possible.

A décolleté augmentation with an autologous fat transfer can be repeated several times, even after a breast reduction has already been performed. Possibly existing asymmetries of the breasts can also be compensated by an autologous fat transfer.

Breast reduction makes the breasts more compact, smaller and lighter. Likewise, the overall volume of the breasts will decrease as excess skin and mammary gland and fat tissue are removed. The breasts are not only smaller after a breast reduction with lifting, but also receive a better shape and possibly even more projection. You will determine the definitive target size together with Dr. Sattler before the operation.

It is important to remember that many women with large breasts also have otherwise voluptuous curves. Therefore, for a balanced appearance, it makes little sense to reduce the breasts extremely if the abdomen, legs, buttocks and hips are very pronounced. An imbalanced body silhouette would be the result. In principle, however, very significant reductions in the size of the breasts are possible. Smaller lighter breasts are like a liberation for many patients, as physical discomfort is regressed. Also, fashionable tight clothing can be worn and activities such as sport are easier with an overall improved body and self-esteem.

The cost of breast reduction is not a fixed price. Prices depend on various aspects, such as the duration of the operation and the surgical effort. In our plastic and aesthetic surgery practice, we will provide you with a detailed consultation and discuss the breast reduction costs with you. You will then receive a written, individual cost estimate.
