Liposuction is very popular, but there is a lot of misinformation circulating on the web about this procedure. Dr. med. Thorsten Sattler, specialist for plastic and aesthetic surgery in Hamburg, exposes three myths about liposuction, so that patients can make the right decision regarding their own procedure in a well-informed manner.
Myth #1: Liposuction is good for weight loss
Liposuction is not for weight loss! Liposuction is used to contour and optimize areas of the body that do not respond to exercise or dieting. The best results are therefore achieved by patients who have reached or are close to their ideal weight and still have small circumscribed fat deposits. If you are aiming for significant weight loss, diet, exercise and, in pronounced cases, bariatric surgery are recommended first. At a later stage, liposuction may then be useful.
Myth #2: Liposuction eliminates sagging skin and cellulite
Liposuction removes excess fat. If the skin and connective tissue are already sagging and damaged before the procedure, the skin may sag even more after the procedure. Therefore, in these cases, liposuction must be combined with tightening surgery, such as an abdominoplasty, thigh lift, or body lift. This is the only way to remove fat and excess skin and at the same time tighten loose skin.
Myth No. 3: The liposuctioned fat comes back after liposuction
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells. However, you can still gain weight back because the remaining fat cells can increase in size if your calorie intake is too high. Other areas of the body may also gain compensatory mass.
After liposuction, it is recommended to maintain the optimized body contour through regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Major weight fluctuations should be avoided.
