Despite its popularity, liposuction continues to be misunderstood by many people. As a top board-certified plastic surgeon in Hamburg, Germany, Dr. Thorsten Sattler is committed to educating his liposuction patients so they can make the best decisions when it comes to their procedure. Here, he dispels the most common myths on liposuction.
Myth #1: Liposuction is a great way to lose weight.
Not to be confused with bariatric surgery, liposuction is not an appropriate tool for weight loss. Instead, the procedure focuses on refining problem areas that are hard to slim down with diet and exercise alone. The best candidates for liposuction are individuals who are near or at a healthy weight and struggle to lose small pockets of fat on one or more body areas. If you want a reduction in body mass, you’re advised to do so with diet and exercise or bariatric surgery before or instead of liposuction.
Myth #2: Liposuction can get rid of loose skin and cellulite.
Liposuction is solely a fat removal procedure. It cannot treat loose skin or cellulite. In fact, the procedure may actually make cellulite or skin laxity appear worse. Combining liposuction with a lift procedure, such as tummy tuck, thigh lift or body lift, can effectively remove stubborn pockets of fat and tighten loose skin at the same time. In some cases, lift procedures can improve the appearance of cellulite, but only slightly.
Myth #3: Fat will return after liposuction.
Let’s clear the air: liposuction removes fat cells permanently. Once removed, these fat cells cannot regenerate or return to the treated area. However, this does not mean that future weight gain is not possible. The fat cells that remain in the treated area and other body areas can still enlarge, leading to weight gain.
The best way to maintain your slimmer and more attractive physique after liposuction is to maintain a healthy and stable weight by eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly.
